Illustrated by: Shilpa Ranade
Publisher: Scholastic India
(Pp 40, ISBN 978-81-8477-844-1, Rs 175)
The name Gulzar needs no introduction – filmmaker, lyricist, scriptwriter, poet, author…the man has myriad talents. This children book is a story about two lads – Goopy and Bagha, while the former is a drummer, the latter is a singer. Both of them find themselves together in a forest as they are driven away by their villagers, who could not appreciate their music. They reveled in each other’s company and created musical duets, happily, loudly and freely. But, they also encounter magic and mystery. Their music is appreciated by the Ghost King and they are rewarded, which changes their life…but there’s still a lot to happen in their life.
The book is very well-written in the form of verses. Equally appealing are the illustrations on each page, which give a life to the story. The enchanting pictures, the beautiful poetic language…take the reader to the place where Goopy and Bagha are encountering their adventures. Children will simply love it!
