What better tribute to a painter than a book with a collection of his paintings! Nicholas Roerich, for whom Mother India was as beloved as his Mother Russia, was one of the most talented artists of the 20th century. India was his spiritual home and the Himalayas his lifelong commitment, even obsession. Over the years, he undertook a series of remarkable and daring Himalayan expeditions in India, Tibet and Mangolia, and this resulted in a large number of extraordinary paintings of the Himalayas and the trans-Himalayan regions.

The book brings together scholarly contributions from a number of people from different disciplines and presents the multi-faceted personality of Nicholas Roerich. The books comes alive with beautiful pictures from his life and of course his wonderful paintings. It’s a tribute to the painter-cum-philosopher who will always be a revered artist for time immemorial.

Author: Rajkishore Sharma ‘Raje’
Publisher: Vishv Books, New Delhi
(Pp 152, ISBN 978-93-5065-054-7, Rs 165)
This book gives a fresh perspective on the rule of British in India. The British came to India for trade but later ruled the nation, why? The author says that it is because the Indian rulers and nawabs at that time used unfair trade means, which provoked the British to rule over India.

Besides, British not just ended the rule of Mughals in India but also were instrumental in developing the nation by educating them and giving them the knowledge of trade and free politics. The author feels that whatever India is today, it is because of the British.

The book gives an issue of debate as not everyone would agree with his perspective. Nevertheless, the book is thought-provoking and gives a different outlook to the history of India pre-independence.

Do you know which road in Delhi boasts of unique heritage in a stretch of 4 km; studded with gateways, mosques, tombs, gardens and even a step-well and a bridge? Yes, we are talking about the Lodi Road, which has these architectural wonders, including the Humayun’s tomb which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The book gives an insight into this treasure trove in the city of Delhi. The text is simple and provides historical, architectural and anecdotal information on each monument. But, the paintings of the buildings add to the richness of this information. Ravi, a self-taught artist has painted these architectural marvels and has provided a little sketch or motif of a part of the building, which appealed to him from a painter’s point of view, such as a dome or a jharoka.

The book takes the readers on a historical ride, informing and captivating them as they turn page by page. Ravi terms his book ‘peg-table book’ as against the usual term - coffee table book. Printed on good quality matte paper, it is a collector’s edition for all those who belong to the amazing ‘Dilli’ city or the tourists who wish to know more about this city.
